Long ago, there was no Philippines, but there was Butuan.

This history is Butuan's edge. The city is the regional center of Caraga, serving as the administrative region of the Philippines. Butuan was the capital of Agusan del Norte until 2000 when the capital was transferred to Cabadbaran City. However, many of the provincial government offices are still located in Butuan, the same with regional offices and national government offices.

Butuan became the center of economy of the Philippines because of its trading relations with the other countries in Asia (including Vietnam and Sumatra), and its colorful history of balangay boats or 'Butuan boats' which were uncovered near the Masao River in Ambago, Butuan City.

Battle of Butuan memorial

In 1902, Butuan was made a town. In March, the first elections in the area happened,
in accordance to Public Law no. 82. The town was destroyed in 1943, when Filipino Guerillas
attacked the Japanese base in Butuan. The town was attacked again in 1945 by Commonwealth
troops in an attempt to capture the town. Still recovering from the war, the town was
destroyed by a fire in October 20, 1948.

The town's economy improved in the 1950s-70s,
when the logging industry was at it's peak. Because of this, Butuan earned the rank of
'Timber City of the South" , and then the town was reclassified into a city on August 2,
1950 because of a bill filed by Cong. Marcos Calo. In Febuary 7, 1995, the city was
promoted into a "highly urbanized city".

Butuan’s location makes it a major travel
hub. The city has an airport, Bancasi Airport (ICAO: RPME, IATA: BXU) , which is served by Philippine Airlines to Manila and Cebu Pacific to Manila and Cebu daily. The city is also a major bus hub, serving routes to Surigao, Davao and Cagayan de Oro with buses leaving every hour. The city is served by a seaport in the neighboring town of Nasipit by various shipping companies like Super Ferry, Sulpicio Lines and Gothong Southern.
Because of its past and its resources, Butuan is well known for its tourism. The city lies along the mighty Agusan River, 2nd longest river in Mindanao. Located in the city are four museums, notably the Regional Museum, Balangay Shrine, where the balangays are located, Asian Century Museum and the Cathedral Museum.

The city’s fiesta is on May 19, as the city’s patron saint is Saint Joseph. The city also hosts the Kahimunan Festival every third Sunday of January, the equivalent to Cebu’s Sinulog Festival. The city also has a Cultural Tourism Consciousness Week, held every last week of July to August 2, in preparation for the city’s Charter Day. Also, every last Sunday of July, the Abayan Festival is held in celebration of St. Anne, the patron saint of the Agusan River. The city is famous for it’s ‘Palagsing’, a local delicacy made in Brgy. Banza, a part of the old center of Butuan. Another local delicacy is Laksoy, or ‘Nipa Wine’.

Brgy. Bonbon, Butuan City

As of 2007, Brgy. Bonbon had 4,351 residents.

Delta Discovery Park

Delta Discovery Park is a newly-opened eco park located in Brgy. Bonbon, Butuan City. The park is perched upon a high ridge, offering breathtaking views of Butuan City and parts of the Agusan Valley. The park's total land area is 86 hectares, of which 77.6 ha are yet to be developed. The park is famous for its 1.3 km zip line, which recently opened last September 18, 2011 and is arguably the longest in Asia. The park also has a 400m back-and-forth zip line, measuring 800m in total.

Another feature the park boasts are guided All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) and Buggy rides. A 45 minute trip to the foot of Mount Mayapay, the trip offers stunning views of both the urban and forested areas of Butuan City. For a more nature friendly experience, the park offers Horse Back Riding to those who are interested.

The park also has an Aviary Park and Nursery. Various kinds of birds like the Philippine Hornbill and the Philippine Hawk-Eagle, and some other animals like Iguanas and Civet Cats can be found there.

The park also has an artificially modified natural swimming pool, directly located below the 400m zip line. A dip in this pool is like swimming in a mountain spring...without the rapids and the rocks. And if you're lucky, you might even see an unidentified flying, moving, screaming and wire-guided object above you.
