Simply, the home of the Discoverers.

But how did this school come to life?

Well, the school started in 1976 as a part of Butuan Central Elementary School (BCES), created to meet the needs of children who required a special education environment in which they needed to flourish. The school originally started with only 2 sequences.

Years went by, and more grades were added.

After the Great City Gymnasium Fire, the school transferred to the former gym's area, and remains there currently. Old relics of the former city gym can still be found on site.

In the 2000s, SPED was a fully-operational school, with complete grades (I-VI) and a functioning Differently-Abled system.

SPED existed as a part of Butuan Central Elementary School, until September 11, 2005, when the school was renamed as Butuan City Special Education (SPED) Center, and was requested to secede from BCES, which was approved by the Department of Education Regional Director, Jesusita L. Arteche. Despite this, SPED's independence is not widely recognized until now.

At one time, there was a suggestion for the school to have high school classes, but were eventually dropped due to the SPED classes of a neighboring school, Agusan National High School. That decision actually helped the partnership of the two schools grow.

Currently, SPED has 3 sections, which are, FL (Fast Learners), SSES (Special Science Elementary School) and DA (Differently-Abled).
